Mary Doering grew up in rural North Dakota. She studied design at the University of Minnesota, Ceramics at the Museum School of Pittsburgh and received a degree in Psychology from Lesley College. She taught Ceramics in Connecticut and Art for the Mind Body and Spirt in Massachusetts. She has won awards both national and internationally for her art and photography. Mary is a founding member of Artsynergies www.artsynergies.com, a group of artists dedicated to expressing their vision using the best of traditional and technological tools. Doering is an unconventional photographer who mixes other media into her
process to create highly stylized work that blurs the boundaries
between photography and other visual mediums. Each digital print begins by choosing images from an extensive collection of my scanned original drawings, paintings, monoprints, and photographs. These elements are then layered over one another. Blending modes are used paying careful attention to hues, form and composition. Hard edges, line and color fields combine in surprising ways. Transparent multilayers echo fainter versions of shapes and textures. The finish work may be altered with pastel, paint, colored pencils or inks. By keeping the process fluid, I enjoy a cross-pollination of the various disciplines.
